Well, you should start with getting as much information by reading SEO forums posts as you can and when you get basics, then start asking the questions if some subjects are beyond and above your apprehension.
SEO is not one-liner answer.

I have read seo articles and doing some basic seo. Creating meta tags etc directory submissions, forum postings have started but traffic is not increasing as much as expected. How can i increase my web traffic?

Tough life mate for a directory owner. How does one increase traffic? After all there are tens of thousands of directories out there.
You could post to forums, that will get you a fair bit of traffic. It will also attract the spam dicks.
You could add your name to every directory list around and I seem to find another one of them every other day - most of which produce some traffic, some very low quality traffic and some good traffic. Maybe we need a directory list of directory lists.
You could submit your site to other web directories but you will probably find that you only get traffic from other directories, after all they are the only ones looking in that category - but you need to do it anyway for backlinks anyway.
You could try social bookmarking, you may pick up webmasters who are at the same site promoting their site but the general public mostly doesn't know what a directory is.
You could try the "create profile" thing in forums and such like, but I don't think that will get you much traffic - and probably not many backlinks.
You could write articles and submit them to article directories - don't think there is much traffic there.
You could target keywords for all of the above, but what words, What keywords does the granddaddy directory of them all, DMOZ rate as number 1.
Making a directory free will get you a lot of traffic and submissions but the spammers will ruin your day.
The above comments are for a "general directory" - niche directories are different.

My #1 SEO advice for directory owners is to treat each category and sub-category as if it were a separate website.
And, of course, there's the basics like keeping categories on topic, splitting categories when they get too big and broad and not allowing crappy submissions.

That's very good advice. The home page of the directory is generally what owners focus all their attention on and its the wrong idea. The content within the categories and deeper pages is what is important, and it needs to be showcased.

I couldn't agree more with YMC and Dan. The majority of my traffic comes from internal content rather than the home page. Pages that have earned inbound links from other sites seems to bring the most traffic.
Quality editorial content is likely to attract the attention of others. A useful resource is generally the result of editorial additions rather than just submissions.

There are basic ones like seo for common websites. However I think most directories would get direct traffic from other websites instead of purely seo line, even a niche one. There are rarely peoples do search for directory in their keywords in search engine for submission purpose. Most of them were intend to spam your directory actually.
If I were you I would get started with "directory of directories" first. It would give you a more target visitors and provide more link value benefits. (They are niche for web directory specifically of course.)

Yes, you are right. I have searched this by writing "free directory listings" etc. and submitted my directory website. And I am getting maximum traffic from this.
What more else?
Thanks & Regards
