After going through the directories that we re-added to the list last update and finding quite a few of them who have some terrible sites listed, we are going to be manually reviewing each sites content, to determine whether an editorial quality guideline is being met.

If we feel that your site is currently listing questionable content, we will list it here so that you are aware of why your site is being removed. Once you've cleaned the content you can ask for a re-review and we will gladly re-add you to the list.

This is a necessary step in increasing the longevity of both this list and the directories that it currently lists.

This will be a two-phase process.

The first phase will be going through the current lists and weeding out the worst offenders. That's general-free, paid and niche directories who have a lot of obviously garbage sites listed.

The second phase (once the new site is created) will be to dig deeper into the content that directories are listing and scrutinise them further to ensure the quality is up to scratch.

I will be starting from the letter "A" in the alphabet. If you want to assist in going through that category and finding sites who have obviously bad content, please let me know. The best way to assist is by naming the directory URL, and the internal URLs on which the bad content can be found.

That is their latest listings section. Of the 20 sites listed in their latest link section 10 of them are blatantly obvious junk and should never have been added. It indicates that there is no editorial process, something we will be pushing harder and harder as the new site comes into fruition.

Dan Please Don't Remove Me YET Clause - If you take it upon yourself to clean up your own listings, but need the time to get to that, then I will give you time.

Please let me know, in this thread, which directories you want me to skip over whilst you clean them up.

I will do this to encourage people to get rid of the garbage they currently have listed in their directories. If you decide to go this option, be advised that whilst I will skip your directory the first time, it will be the first one that I examine thoroughly the second time and if you haven't cleaned the directory then not only will I be forced to remove it, I will also be far less interested in re-adding you once I have - I think that is a fair trade off.

nb: If I have already reviewed and flagged your site, it will be removed.

Add Your Web Page has a major duplication issue. In their latest links alone there are 8 Vending Machine sites out of the 20 sites listed. They all have the same description, URL structure and only differ by region. This is a case of weak/lazy editing. They are also allowing keyworded spam entries through.

A-live Directory Has a few entries in their latest link profile that are keyword spam in either the Title, the Description or Both. This highlights the weakness of owning so many directories. It gives rise to much weaker editing as time is spread thin across a whole range of directories, and therefore the editing isn't as strict.

AZ Links - This is a double bunger because listing Casino type sites will always be up for debate. I think if people are going to list Casino sites, the editing on those sites (titles, descriptions etc) need to be exemplary. Also, the sites themselves need to not be spammy either. Unfortunately this one on AZ doesn't pass the test. The description is just a list of derivative "Casino" keyphrases. The Title is just a singular generic use of the word "Casino". 6 uses of the word Casino, make this submission an obvious rejection. The site itself looks ok (no visible advertising, seems to be a blog I can't read german), but the editing of the submission is what is weak in this instance.

A2Z Web Index - Two of the sites in latest links don't even have a description... That was a bit disconcerting, since most directories would have a filter to prevent that. So in this case it has slipped through the editing. The other problem is a keyword spammed title, though there was only one, that I saw. I think the "no description" presents a bigger problem. The Furniture title is such an easy fix, it's just so lazy to add that without getting rid of the pipes and removing the second and third instances of the word "furniture". A far better title is Modern And Contemporary Italian Furniture

On the contrary I am quite happy to spend the time doing this. Under the current system it is just very difficult to do. Of course, moving into the new site, where my time is freed up it will become much easier to do.

I have never suggested that was a bad idea. We've discussed that to death. You made it clear you've moved on from that.

I also suggested that we use them to build an archive of stuff to watch for.

I'm ok with this as long as the time is taken not to just paste Bad URLs. The only person that helps is the owner of the Bad URL. I thought I made that pretty clear at the time also. If I didn't make it clear then let me try again:

- 1. We are seen to be linking to a lot of bad neighbourhoods, I bet you could find 50 -100 in some of the directories easily. So that's 50-100 bad links a session that are placed against the forum's link profile. Not really something we should be encouraging.

- 2. Despite us qualifying that the links are bad, we are still linking to those sites. That counts as a vote for that site. It doesn't matter that we say the site is bad, the search engine isn't human and it counts our link as a positive vote for that bad site.

However what's really going to interesting is to see what sort of response you get from "the community".

If I have to run through every directory myself and do it, I will. Wouldn't be any different to how the lists started.

I don't have any "mates" in this game. It is a thankless task. All I get is abuse. The fact that I know that what I am doing is helping everyone is enough for me. People have called me stupid for doing this for free, but hey I'm a sucker

It was always what I was going to do. It's the whole reason I've spent 2 years developing a site that will run itself and allow me to be free to review properly and not just arbitrarily.

Ok, it's taken me 2 years and you've seen nothing of a new site, hell I could be making it up. You won't see anything for at least another 100 days either. But, like you've said to me, you can't see past the *directory* to the *master* sitting behind it. When the new site is in place, I won't need luck, I will have all the time in the world to take this site and the industry in the right direction. Whether it is too late or not only time will tell. In my head this has been in the pipeline since June 2005. It's always been a part of how the site would run. Getting from point A to point B wasn't as simple as I thought. Half a dozen coders and literally thousands of dollars later, it's only just getting close to where I want it to be. Not having to talk to a developer every 5 minutes does free the time up a little, it still takes a lot more time manually mucking around the way I am forced to at the moment. It is triple handling. Forum/Excel/Site. It will soon just be Site. The excel will take care of itself, and the forum will change, and no longer be available for announcements.

I don't believe that there is one directory on these lists that will pass muster. It just depends how deep one digs. The question that needs to be asked is what is your concern and then secondly what is your objective?

Those directories that you have flagged still offer web masters back links which if I am not mistaken still have a short term value. I don't believe that has changed, at least not yet. And If I am correct this means that we still have time. The question that we need to ask is whether we can realistically change the course that this industry is headed in and if so to then start doing it.

For me this is real simple. Would Google accept a cunningly worded Title and Description for a professionally designed and crafted site that's made solely to generate adsense revenue or would they flag it as junk and links litter?

Your entire post contradicts itself. You want the industry cleaned up, then you question the fact it is being attempted. Your knowledge of backlinks is novice at best, so let's not even go there.
