Directory Promotion Forum Rules - 2012

The directories forum has been designed to give feedback on, and to help promote directories ONLY.

We do not support or allow the advertising/promotion of the following directory types:
  • Bidding Directories - On a strict pay-for-review basis they fail the test and are no more than an attempt to sell paid text links to the highest bidder.
  • Directory Lists / Directories of Directories - We already have the internet's most recognised list. If you wish to contribute, that's great please tell us about some directories, but do not advertise or promote your directory list here please.
  • Submission Services - The forum is for directories and their promotion, not for submission services. Please do not advertise or promote directory submission services anywhere on this forum.
  • Directory Networks - If you've just started a network of 10 general directories all with similar names, or *.info domains, we don't want to know about them, because they are guaranteed link farms. Go elsewhere!

NB: This is not a place to spam your website. Directory owners can start their own thread and promote their directories. However, if they spam their directory link in other people's threads or if they create multiple threads when one will do then they will be banned.

The rules are simple: If your site isn't a directory, then do not post your URL.

I am 100% behind directory owners, so I expect them to return that respect and to use the free promotion that we provide them in a reasonable manner. I don't care what sort of spamming other forums allow. We will not tolerate it. It is the one rule that if you break, you will be banned, and if you continue your directory may be removed indefinitely from the list.

Please think before you post.

Default Define a directory please?

Hi I run a search engine with a webspider that indexes websites, would I be able to class this as a directory? We do index websites from around the world but mostly from New Zealand, Australia. We do index within 24hrs of a domain being suggested for free, so how do you define a directory/ search engine?
We have around seventy million within our index.
We have indexed websites like Sootle & Google Directories which provide really good search engine results and they do get a heap of results and visits from our users which are around 120,000 a day!
So I would be interested to find out what you guys define as a search engine friendly directory.
I would be interested to pass my webspider though a heap fo them because they do give really good searchable results when Spidered.
So can I list my search engine here?

Heaps of regards
Dave Andrews
From the "www.linknz.co.nz" kiwi search engine. I will await your replies to this posting!

Hi Dave,

Sorry, No. Search Engines aren't directories. Search Engines have to go and search and retrieve results based on the users query.

Directories have static results, and whilst many have a search function, all their results are on display via categories and do not require a search to find them. This allows search engine bots (im talking about the big 3 here) to pick up and index the sites in their listings.

The reason I have no interest in listing Search Engines is because there are 3 that everyone uses and thousands that no one uses. Also, none of the sites you have indexed will be listed on those 3 search engines, which is the whole point of listing in directories, i.e. backlinks.

Wink Requirements & suggestions to get listed.

hello...

My name is Malcolm and I just wanted to say I am New to this forum and wanted to thank you for the hard work you do in updating all the directories. I came across your site in another forum,"engineseekers".
Another member their was offering knowledge on lists of directories to apply to and yours was the best organized and informative. Needless to say I have applied to most if not all for my website "biz-giant".
I am currently in the process of building my own directory and it should be completed within the next week.
If you could give me any suggestions on how to Promote my directory or the specific requirements to be listed on your site I would be most apprecitive.
I welcome any comments or suggestions you may have so as to inform my programmer of such detailed requirments.

"If I have posted in wrong section please move"

Thank you
malcolm A

Where do you draw the line between a directory and a links page? For example, I have a directory on a subdomain from the main site. The main domain is not a directory, but the subdomain has a small, niche directory, linking back to the main site in its footer. Submission is available via a submissions page, so it's not email only or anything.

Can I announce this subdomain in the list suggestions thread?

If so, I'm wondering where the cutoff point is between a directory and a links page (which a high proportion of sites have in some form or another). Is it a matter of size, or submission method, the way it is linked to the main site, or something else altogether?

Directories categorise the links.

Links pages, generally, don't.

Why is that useful? directories provide a link from a related category, that also includes links to other sites that are also related. Links pages tend to just have a mixture of links, even if they provide headings to differentiate, it is still a mixture of links usually on the same page.

Is your "directory" eligible? I don't know until I see it.

Directories also have a description that does long too, where the link pages are often just href's and anchor text.

The objective is often differnet too.. where directories may strive to be a useful resource (categorization, description and link quality) and link pages strive to be full of links (regardless of category and quality).

You need to announce it here by starting a new thread.

In your instance I cannot include the directory in it's current format because it uses internal redirects.
