SEO question re: PR of category pages
Hi guys:
I am working on a new directory but also submit my ecommerce site to directories and have a question: If a directories PR is 7 (say AliveDirectory), but the category that I want to submit my link to (say http://www.alivedirectory.com/Shopping/Toys_and_Games/) has a PR of 0, the PR7 does me no good correct? My link is still on a PR0 and therefor has very little "voting power", correct?
Thanks!

In terms of PR, you are correct.
The PR7 page is the one with the power. Pagerank is voting power from a page, not a site. The difference with those big directories is generally a higher PR means a more frequent call, so you are more likely to get a quick indexation of your link. Also because of the buzz around those types of directories they tend to get a lot of traffic, so you might get some follow-through from that.
It's why I say to people that PR doesn't really matter when submitting to directories because you aren't going to get a lot of it. Generally your link is a level or 2 deep, so that prevents you getting the top page PR. Also you are usually on a page with maybe 10 or 20 other listings, so the PR is diluted between all those sites as well.

just a little note
If that category is newly created, it will have PR on next update.
In some cases, PR is actually masked for quite a few updates to come, so that while there is a page or domain that might have very high PR, the actual PR displayed is lot smaller or 0, for whatever reason. Happens occasionally, I think even alivedir, or some other, was a victim of having much lower PR than deserved.

Alive was a PR4, for 1 full update - when speculation was that it should've been at least a 6.
Some other sites had artificially inflated PR as well. They had a lot more than they should've, and this came down after that update as well.

But what you have to know is PR isn't what's gunna get you that traffic from Google you've always wanted. Your position in the SERPS is only marginally affected by the PR of your site. You should be link building - with appropriate anchor text - rather than PR building. That's what directories are good for - not PR.

Agreed, which is why I have always said, do not think about the PR when submitting. It is beyond yours, or the site owners, control. Google doles out PR so it's not worth the time speculating on what PR sites are going to have.

I think it should also be said that the PR will filter down over time. If a site has a PR7 home page it is likely that most inner pages will eventually get a PR5 and the main categories will likely have a chance at a PR6.
