Default Let's get social!

Anyone that knows me, knows I am not a big fan of social media for SEO purposes. Simply because it's usually very contrived, a lot of "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours", and it doesn't convert... ever...

However, as reputation management, I have always advocated it (there's a post around here somewhere), particularly when you receive negative reviews. I don't suggest spending a lot of time engaging in social media activities. Time spent on twitter for example, posting "fun quotes", haiku's and personal anecdotes, or whingeing that you have no dunny paper is time wasted IMO. It is self serving, narcissistic and really just adds more noise to the web, and less signal.

So with that in mind, what I do suggest is spending the time to accurately set up an account with your company information, and keeping it up to date. I wouldn't use it as one of the 10 places you spam your site and its products. Don't spruik stuff, just create an honest lay out of what you do, and when discounts or new product lines enter your business, then sure let your "base" know about it.

For directory owners, this probably means just setting up a solid profile detailing why your directory exists, what your goals are, how you go about editing/reviewing and listing sites, and other pertinent information.

I wanted to start by saying I am finally going to open a LinkedIn account. I actually *thought* I had one, but when I went there I couldn't find a login (did a pw request on a few of the email addresses I use and nada, zip, nothing!).

Whose going to join me and get social?

Back in 2010, I actually had some functionality work done on the site, to include directory owner social profile information. The "social buttons" that exist on the details pages, were a left-over idea from the mid-2000s when social was just emerging and everyone was talking about "bookmarking". Those would be switched off and replaced with owner's actual social profiles.

Hmmmn, now I come to think of it, I have been getting "Linkedin requests" to 2 of my email accounts for years now, so I wonder if I actually do have an account hahaha.
