Directory Industry Authorities
I'm currently in the process of a very in-depth analysis of directories for a blog post I have been planning for quite some time.
Basically I wanted to go beyond a simple "metric based" analysis and balance it out with what I am going to call editorial mentions from authoritative sources.
I wanted to have a discussion here about what websites people consider to be authorities in the directory industry. Not necessarily directories themselves, but analysts of the industry who report and recommend resources.
What places and people do YOU consider to be the authorities of the industry?
They can be bloggers, tweeters, directories, websites, forums....
I'll let you know my thoughts once the discussion is underway. I'll also give a little insight as to why I believe these editorial mentions to be an important consideration when analysing directories.

Well, in my opinion you yourself would be that person, on a top of the list.
When it comes to others so called "Gurus of Industry", they are lacking deep understanding what constitutes authoritative directory because their knowledge is clouded by commercial values rather than deep analyzes of
directories that pragmatically strive and committed to be above these values.
LOL, I can tell you with ease who are NOT authorities in Directories Industry by using as an example fastreplies challenging proposition he made in his post in SEOMOZ and bunch of Forums and Blogs about 3 years ago
challenging SEOMOZ and any other so called "Pro" to point him to any directory on their "Strongest Directories" list or any list where any other directory pound per pound comes even close to what AMRAY Directory has to offer but, as you probably guessed, "Pros" at SEOMOZ simply failed because of what I would call a lack of analytic capabilities when it comes to out of the box thinking.

That would be RobJones.
He used to be a DMOZ editor, then got pinched by BOTW. Smart folks they have over there
He is a v7n moderator, and has also recently taken over NetBuilders Webmaster Forum
He would probably laugh, but yes I would consider him to be an authority, when discussing directories (probably horses too, but that's another kettle of fish!)

I guess I need to get with the times. I don't really know of many other directory sites besides one who's name I shan't not mention. I removed my link to there site awhile ago. I just use IVS and Dan's help.
or do you just mean people?

To quote myself...
What places and people do YOU consider to be the authorities of the industry?
They can be bloggers, tweeters, directories, websites, forums.... and I guess that involves people too!
I don't mean directory lists specifically, unless you know one that vets content like IVS. The ones that don't? There's hundreds of them, they are worthless including the well known ones.

Brent, who runs Best Web Directories and Web Directories.WS, does offer a level of vetting/review. He's been around a long time, he offers an opinion from time to time and I would definitely also consider him an authority in the biz.
Whilst he does list a large number of directories (quantity based like the other lists), unlike all those other lists he does take the time to actually assign notes to each one, and "ongoing" either recommends them or gives a reason why they are not recommended.
I won't bother going through the 20,000+ list that's just not worth my time because I've probably removed 19,000 of those from my own lists over the years hahaha. However, his short-list on BWD I'm definitely going to add as one of the editorial mentions in the in-depth analysis (with appropriate accreditation of course).
I've just read a blog post from one of those other lists claiming to be "the directory authority resource", I coughed up my drink through my nose I was laughing so hard.
The only thing that particularly list is an authority in, is listing spam and junk. They are an expert at that.
