Default Near duplicate submissions

My inclination is to delete but thought I would ask as I see this as a real problem for where I am trying to take this project.

It is clear that http://www.miami-trafficschool.com/, http://www.california-trafficschool-online.com/ and http://www.texas-defensivedriving-courses.com/ is the same company with sites fro different states.

Delete all? Keep 1? Keep all?

There is also a similar thing where a fenceless dog pen outfit has identical sites for its dealers.

In some respects they are regional specific but kinda spammy.

I am finding this now because after fighting to get my directory populated it is time to clean things up and am going to re-evaluate every listing.

While it is entirely possible no one but me gives a rats... but I do and I must satisfy myself (even if I never make a penny from the project).

My policy is to keep one, delete the rest. Basically I allow one submission per category, per business. And if I let in a second in a different category there has to be an exceptionally good reason for it. Stuff like this is especially prevalent in the finance category.

If your script allows you to make private comments next to each submission, make a note of the business address. That will help you sort out the duplicate submissions.

I agree.

The reason someone does one for all states is because they want to rank for all states. The sites, for all intents and purposes, are identical - so because they contain nothing unique or new there really is no point in listing more than 1 of them.

If they submit a national one, that'd be the best one to keep, otherwise just go with the first and trashcan the rest.

Thanks. That makes sense. I can see record keeping becoming an issue.

Learning my lesson, I hope. It is looking like around 80-100 hours to go through the whole thing cleaning out duplicates, fixing titles and descriptions and getting rid of some junk which got through.

Wish I had a way to seperate 'real traffic' from the submission bots. Running around 150 unique, near 240 visits/day and chewing bandwidth like crazy.

The awstats are extremely interesting as to which categories get visited most and where referrals come from. More from VMOptions than Directory Critic. 51% from referrals and 2% from SE's.

I know, who cares but for me there is a ton of information there.

Just found this. If all descriptions were like this life would be good indeed.

Dark chocolate from around the world. Bars, gifts, truffles, and more made from the finest dark chocolate in the world. Delicious and delectable gifts for all occasions. Indulge yourself now with the gift of deep, dark chocolate.

Now I remember why I never became a full fledged editor at JoeAnt. Writing/fixing descriptions is hard ass work.

Pardon me but I keep getting a 'need to rant' pain in my head.

I feel your pain friend

Honestly it's refreshing to see someone showing your level of concern. If more of us ,and I include myself, would do so, the directory world would improve immensely.

Also interesting you take time to dissect your stats. Of all the directories/owners it would be interesting to see the ratio that could tell you anything about their traffic or for that matter even care.

Anyway, best of luck with you project.

I don’t know why you like this description but I know our editors would reject submission because of spammy content.
Just to give you idea what they would accept (edited by our editor)

We delete almost all of those submissions... as in our main directory we ask people NOT submit automotive related links and to use our automotive directory instead.

Those "people" generally don't follow that directive... and get rejected.

Mimika, Thanks for that. I guess that after some of the stuff I had been dealing with this one looked good. After a good head clearing sleep it doesn't work. I need to limit the time working on this without a break.

Also, writing is not my strong point.
