Default If you could build

If you were not limited by finances or know how (certainly limiting factors for me)and you could start from scratch today and build your brand new "Dream Directory" what elements would you add to it? How would you describe your "Dream Directory?

What kind of design would you make? Bright and flashy with bold colors or more subdued and "business like"?

What "mods" do you feel are must have? Are there mods for your base script you would like to see created that could possibly add more "value" or simply something to make the back end easier?

What would you do to make it more appealing or hold the attention of visitors?

What sort of things would you do to make it interesting and interactive?

I'm trying to pick the brains of you creative types I guess. I have a hard time getting the creative juices flowing and enjoying reading the different ideas people have....that they are willing to share

Some nice-to-haves...

- A directory that automatically rejects auto-submitted sites.
- A directory that detects and rejects spammy/over-commercialized sites.
- A directory that can tell when a site is under-developed and not yet suitable.

Swimming upstream ideas...

- Avoid the latest over-used bells and whistles.
- Provide real value to end users, instead of web masters only.

Man these sure would be nice to have. If some very smart programmer/coder developed something that could do these things he/she would become an overnight sensation...would certainly get my $$$.

I tend to agree with Grokodile's suggestions. I already have some kind of system for examining the submissions and sorting them according to how many spammy features they have. Extending that to a spider would be useful. Flagging things like "lorum ipsum" and "under construction" text is a pretty mechanical task, after all. There are a lot of other phrases that could be added to that list.

The only trouble is, the more you automate, the less it's a directory and the more you're into search engine territory. Although to an extent that's only semantics, because most directory scripts have some degree of automation.
