I was reading this interesting article a few days ago which proposed the question: Is it time to give the world language (i.e. English) a new name?

article: http://bit.ly/19oMSuq

I thought it was interesting for a number of reasons.

The internet, the affordability of travel, and multiculturalism are making the world a much smaller place. Traditional national pride and boundaries are being eroded. The world is slowly and surely moving to a place of "I own" to "We belong". If you fast forward, the notion of something being "English" or "Indian" or "African" or "American" seems ridiculous. This whole idea of race is also ridiculous. People are people. A better name for English would be Global. I'm sure the wikipedia entry would always say "founded in England" but it has now been adopted by the world and should be updated in name to reflect that. It's not a brand!

The dialects they speak of, are probably always going to exist. The author of the article talks about Australian English, and there are definite slang terms I could go into that Americans wouldn't understand (and vice versa). However, particularly in the written form with the lack of tone and more formality introduced into writing the language IS universal. Even accounting for daft things like color and colour.

What do you think?

Most directories will send out an email to the submitter when a website/url is submitted to a directory. The same may apply when the submission is approved or rejected.

Do you use these notification emails to advertise other products/services?

*Eligibility Criteria:*
* Must have been operating as as directory for at least 7 years.
* Must have at least 1 citation from the list of 12 directory...

I recently released a top 50 strongest directories list which was based on a number of criteria.

Eligibility Criteria:

Must have been operating as as directory for at least 7 years.

Must have at least 1 citation from the list of 12 directory sources.

Must have a non-zero pagerank, and not be currently penalised.

Must be online, indexed and available.

Literally 2 or 3 directories didn't make it because they were under penalty, and/or had zero pagerank; and quite a few fairly strong directories didn't make it purely on age (there's literally 2 that will make the list next year as they hit that 7 year age requirement).

One interesting directory that didn't make the cut was searchinq (formerly UncoverTheNet). It had quite a few citations (6 - some as UTN, and some as searchinq), but it had a 0 pagerank due to it's recent name change in 2013. I *may* consider this one in future under UTN's age, depending on what happens with it. It does have a weak OSE score, whilst UTN has a strong OSE score.

Unlike other strongest directories lists created in years gone by (and even recently) I've done more than just rank via the SEOMoz Open Site Explorer (OSE) metric or associated data profiles.

I find the metric lacks the balance required to rely on it, because it gives weighting where weighting shouldn't exist. One example is romow.com which no longer exists, but which has a strong domain authority of 71, despite being offline for several years. I find that incredibly weak, and it's not an isolated example by any stretch.

Metrically the OSE is good for what it offers, but it also gives weighting to paid link schemes that are working, and also for strong but non-relevant links. This is where I had the most trouble with it. Effectively sites gaming the system were given big weighting; as were non-relevant links.

In order to provide much needed balance I seasoned the OSE metrics (and dampened over-inflated scores) by including editorial citation data from relevant and credible directory sources and also included the directory's age. This took an incredible amount of time to research and apply the criteria. Age is such an important consideration when it comes to directories, and OSE data seems to ignore it completely from the in-depth results I've obtained (Over 1000 URLs).

So, the OSE score is used as a baseline signal instead, and then built into that with greater weight is the citation data, and then on top of that to level out the old from the young is the directories age. The OSE is a little less than a 3rd of the signal in the final ranking criteria, and the citation data represents about 40% leaving the age amplification to fill in the rest.

This provided a much more accurate reflection of a directory's strength than OSE alone. It was interesting to see the cream rise to the top, even with a weak OSE base-point, some directories are heavily referenced and cited and deserved their additional weighting and rank. I don't think anyone would disagree with the final results, putting before-and-after's side by side. Since the list is essentially 12 lists distilled into 1, it really is the ultimate strongest directories list bar none.
