View Full Version : Scheduled Server Migration

Hello all,

Within the next week or so, the IVS website is going to be migrated to a new server. I'm not expecting any delays or outages, but that doesn't mean they won't happen.

I will perform a full backup prior to the migration and hope that everything proceeds without a hitch.

Just as a heads up, I haven't had much luck with server migrations in the past. Something always seems to go wrong, and we lose data, the site doesn't work properly and requires fixing or something else.

So if for some reason the site is unavailable during this time, I apologise in advance.

regards,
Dan

Good luck! And may the directory force be with you!

First hiccup has arrived.

I've been charged for a new server (just received an overdue notice), whilst payment on the old server has gone through. I questioned the new charge and was told the old server had been disabled... Which begs the questions:

1. Why have I been charged for the old server for the next month;
2. Why is the old IP address still showing as the website on a DNS lookup.

Aware of 72 hour nameserver propagation... It's been longer than that. Like a week. So I'm assuming it is just a misunderstanding between billing and technical departments.

Can you get your money back? Seems like a crap deal to charge you for something you are not using.

They are going to pro-rata the old onto the new.

Basically the old server is on auto-payment, so I auto paid that one and they've set up a payment for the new one because I've triggered the "let's migrate the server" conversation.

It'll work out. Always does. Just hate the process. Annoys the hell out of me.

72 hours propagation? It shouldn't take that long anymore - something is wrong at their end if this is the case. Internal DNS changes should update as soon as the name server is refreshed/restarted. Propagation after a DNS redelegation should take no longer than 6 hours.

Good to see the OneTel-style billing system and TPG-style customer service is alive and running wild in the web hosting industry - not.

I hope any dramas are sorted quickly :)

They said 2-48 hours. I haven't asked for it to be done yet. So they are jumping the gun.
